Maple Syrup

3rd grade students joined Cedarburg's Scientist in Residence, Kendra, as we visited our Parkview Maple Syrup Operations.  Students learned about the process of tapping a maple tree, drawing out the sap, and were able to observe boiling sap while removing water through the evaporation process.  We were all able to enjoy some of Mr. Keller's (5th grade teacher) home-made recipe.  Yum!

Egypt Projects: Topic Choice due Monday, March 27th

This week your child received the informational packet on the at home Egypt project and artifact. Your child will be required to do a Google Presentation or Story Board (presentation part). Some time will be given in class to work on the Google Presentation or Story Board. Your child will also need to create an artifact at home (an object that goes along with his/her presentation). Please have your child choose their topic of interest by Monday, March 27th.

Egypt Project Note: Click here to view link

Your child will receive this survey sheet to think about questions to research. This is NOT due on Monday (only the topic choice will be due). However, next week we will begin creating questions and researching those questions. If your child wants to get a head start this weekend, he/she can use this sheet as a reference guide.

Forward Testing Information

The Wisconsin Forward Exam

Third Grade Classroom Testing Times (Click for links)

Information for Families 2016-2017 | Cedarburg School District

March 13, 2017
Cedarburg students in grades 3-10 will be participating in the Wisconsin Forward Exam between March 20, 2017 and May 5, 2017. The schedule below outlines the testing dates for all tested grade levels in our school. The Forward Exam is a summative, online assessment that gauges your child's achievement in the content areas tested compared to other students in the state. The exam will assess students’ understanding in Mathematics and English Language Arts in grades 3-8, Science in grades 4 and 8, and Social Studies in grades 4, 8, and 10. This test is untimed, so we plan for ample time to allow children to finish, and we are able to take short sections of the exam each day, so as not to over-test our children. Your child’s teacher will provide a more detailed test schedule.
Grade Level:
Testing Dates:
Third Grade
March 28, 29, 30, 31, and April 3,4,5, and 6
As parents you can assist in preparing your child(ren) in the following ways:
  • Ensure regular attendance during the examination window;
  • Have your child(ren) get plenty of rest by going to bed at a reasonable time;
  • Provide a healthy breakfast; and
  • Review the helpful information that is attached about the Forward Exam.
As a district, we encourage all students to participate in our state assessments. We have prepared for our students to perform beyond the scope of this assessment with the teaching and learning activities in our district curriculum. The Forward Exam is a part of our well balanced assessment program. This exam and other student performance data provide us with a complete profile of student growth. If there is a desire to opt your child out of the state testing, please contact me directly as the state law requires a written request to the principal stating you wish to opt out of the Forward Exam.
Attached is an Informational Brochure for Families which gives more information about the assessment including its purpose, what scores will be provided, and how the scores will be used.
Please contact me or your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jayne Holck

Forward Testing

Starting on March 28th, your child will be starting to prepare for the statewide Forward Exam. This will be their first exposure to a statewide test. It is very similar to our MAP testing, so they should have no problem adjusting. To better prepare them for the test your child can go on Typing Agent (to practice his/her typing skills), logging onto MobyMax (for math or reading skills) or using our resources and links tab (math skills). If you would like more information about the exam you can click on the link  FORWARD Exam.
It is important that ALL students have working headphones for these test sessions. Please TRY TO NOT schedule any appointments for those days. It is a long test and I wouldn’t want them to miss classroom time to make up for their testing.

You can assist your child prepare for testing by doing the following:

  • Make sure your child gets a good night sleep before a test, as well as a good breakfast.
  • Maintain a pleasant home environment and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
  • Try to make the morning of the test a pleasant one.
  • Do not add to your child’s stress.
  • Make sure your child has taken any needed medication.
  • Ensure that your child is present during testing (children generally perform better when taking tests in their groups rather than at a make-up time).
  • Get your child to school on time the day of the test. Some tests start at 9:00.
  • Wish your child good luck each morning of the test.
  • Tell your child that he/she is special and that you believe in him/her! Remind your child the test is important.
  • Encourage him/her to do his/her best.  If your child is too ill to attend, please call the school office.
  • Remind your child to listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher and to read the directions and each question carefully.
  • Make sure your child has working headphones here at school!
  • Explain to your child the importance of using time wisely.
  • If your child gets stuck on a question, encourage him or her to make the best guess and move on.
  • Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.

St. Patrick’s Day, Friday, March 17th

Calling on all third graders to participate in the annual “Wearing of the Green” contest!  We will award prizes for the student wearing the most green in each class, and finally the student wearing the most green for the whole of third grade.

Contest rules:

  • Each different green item will be worth one point- for example; two of the same earrings would be worth one point, but two different earrings would count for two points.
  • Be creative!  You can pin green items from around the house on your shirt, make your own paper rainbows, etc.
  • Green hair and makeup is allowed and fun, but will not count towards points.
  • Prizes will awarded by your teacher at the end of the day.

We are all Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! Have fun, and Erin go Bragh!

Recorders!!

3rd Grade Recorder Information
Recorders have arrived! :-)
They will be handed out on the following days during music class:
Moldenhauer: Wednesday, March 8th
Studer: Thursday, March 9th
French: Friday, March 10th

If your child is bringing a recorder from home, please send it to school with them on the date listed above so they can learn to play their recorder along with everyone else.  Rented recorders will be issued at the same time as purchased recorders.  Rented recorders may be taken home, but must be returned at the end of the school year in good condition.  They will be labeled "Parkview" but also have your child's name attached to the case.
I am requesting that your child's recorder be kept in their backpack so it can travel between home and school.  Students will not be allowed to play them on the bus, during recess, or before and after school while on campus.
Cleaning and Care Instructions:
The recorder may be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher or washed by hand in the sink.  If using the dishwasher, you may want to check that your hot water temperature setting will not melt it.  :-)  The recorder separates into two pieces.  If washing by hand, use a small cloth to dry the inside and outside of the recorder or simply let it air dry.  Avoid using paper towel or Kleenex to dry the inside of the recorder.  A very small amount of grease should only be applied to the very bottom of the top piece after each wash when the recorder is dry.  Vaseline works well too.
Recorder Expectations:

Students should bring their recorders with them to each music class for the remainder of the school year.  Students who frequently forget their recorders may experience a drop in their instrumental grade on their progress report since their practice, participation, and/or assessments may be limited.  If your child forgets to bring his/her recorder to music class, they will be issued a loaner to use that day during class so they can continue practicing their fingerings (no mouthpiece).  If a recorder is lost or damaged, please let me know immediately so one can be rented or purchased for your child.  This will prevent them from getting behind.  Also, please let me know if any special circumstances occur that would prevent your child from having and/or playing their recorder so their grade is not negatively affected.

Food Logs

Your child will be bringing home a Food Log today.  This will be a graded project, in which students are to record various food items, that they eat during each meal and throughout the day.  Please have your child bring this log back and forth to school each day.  We will give them time to fill out their lunch and snack items daily.  We hope this will be an eye-opening experience for the students as they become more aware of the various food items they consume daily.  Happy logging!
