Red Ribbon Week

It is National Red Ribbon Week!
What is Red Ribbon Week? It is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse. Below is a chart of different dress up days as well as topics to have some family discussions.

Graphing, Maps, & Reading!

Math
Thank you for all our M&M and Skittle Donations for our graphing unit.  Third grade enjoyed categorizing, graphing, and making statements about their data...not to mention eating these yummy treats.  Students also conducted their own surveys and questioned the other third grade classrooms this past week.  Then they created a double bar graph comparing the results.  We will be wrapping up our graphing unit this week.

Social Studies-Test this WEEK!
Thank you for helping your child prepare for their mapping test this coming week.  Your child brought home a study guide and blue map folder that they created for review.  See notes from last week regarding test information.

Reading Party
Mmmmm...applesauce!  Our Apple Reading and Math Celebration was delicious!  Our students have worked hard at meeting their Reading and Math Minutes for the month. Students enjoyed a bowl of warm homemade applesauce and enjoyed reading books with friends while setting new goals for next month.

We are continuing to teach maps and globes. More information will be coming home regarding the final test dates for maps and globes test and mental map quiz. At home your child can practice creating a mental map of the world including the 7 continents and 5 oceans. A letter went home with your child's mental map and the date of the final quiz is TBD. Your child's teacher will let you know when those assessments will take place by putting the dates on the 3rd grade calendar and the assignment notebook. Both the mental map and maps and globes unit test will be the week of Oct. 17th. Your child will take home a blue foldable this week and can use that as as study guide resource.

Reading/Math Calendar Reminders:
Thanks so much for your donations for our Sept. Reading/Math celebration. The rooms smelled delicious with all the apples & cinnamon. The kids had a fun time enjoying the special treat! Please remember to have your child continue to read, practice addition math facts and log his/her minutes on the October reading/math calendar. A great resource to use for studying math facts is by clicking on Parkview's homepage, then the IMC tab, then Moby Max. Your child can enter his/her username and password located in the assignment book. Your child's teacher will show them this resource this week, but you can also have them try it out this weekend.

Math Graphing:
We are teaching your child how to collect, organize and interpret data. The goal is to write quality statements about graphs so in real life your child can understand graphs when reading the newspaper, Internet, magazines etc. If you happen to see a graph or use a graph in your work please share this with your child.  This week we will be working on bar graphs and line plots. Here is the Skittle graph sign up. Thanks for your donations.

Communication Arts:

Your child has begun to practice writing summaries about the books they've heard or read in class. Your child used various story  maps which included characters, setting, problem, events and the conclusion to write a letter. The letters show if your child understand how to summarize the key events in a story (comprehension). We will continue to practice this skill throughout the year.

Fairy Tale Unit:

This month your child will learn about the various components of a fairy tale so they can understand this genre The teachers will read various versions of Cinderella (Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, Yeh-Shen, Egyptian Cinderella and the original Cinderella). We will teach your child how to compare and contrast the various versions as well as understand the theme (message of the story). We will connect this to writing and each kid will write their own fractured fairy tale version of Cinderella and create a pumpkin carriage at the end of the month to connect with the story (More details to come).
