Simple Machines

In May, third grade will kick-off our Simple Machines science unit.  This year, your child will NOT be required to complete a Simple Machine Project. Your child will still be learning about Simple Machines, but we will not have a Simple Machine Night for your family to attend. Our scheduled field trip, May 22 to Discovery World, will support and provide enrichment for our Simple Machines Unit. Please contact your teacher if interested in chaperoning this event. If your child is inspired to create a Simple Machines Recycled Arcade Game, they are more than welcome to create this at home and share with their classmates.
In celebration for Earth Day, third graders will be walking to the pond/park on Friday, April 21, from 2:30- 3:30, and helping to clean up our green space.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for this activity.  Students are welcome to bring boots, as the grass may be a bit mucky.  We will provide rubber gloves for the children. Happy Earth Day!

Egypt Projects due NEXT WEEK!

Starting  Monday, the third graders will be presenting their Egypt Projects.  *Contact your teacher for a list of which day your child will be presenting.

We hope they have been working and practicing their presentations.  In order to have a complete presentation they need to do either a Google Slide Presentation or Discovery Education Board for the information they researched.  In addition to the presentation, they need to make an artifact. We grade only based on effort and how they tie it into the presentation. We encourage hand made and created items.

Attached below are some helpful hints about how to access Google Slides or Discovery Education Boards. Please email any of us with any questions or concerns!

Calling all GREEN, YELLOW, & LIGHT BLUE crayons!

Dear Family,

Third grade is going to be working on a special secret project for Mother’s Day, and we are asking everyone to bring in as many green crayons for this project as possible.  Check last year’s school supplies!  Check in between the couch cushions!  Check your junk drawers!  Emerald, kelly, lime, light blue, or yellow - we need all different kinds of green, yellow & light blue crayons.  Please bring these, along with $3.00  to school by Friday, April 28th.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Thank you,
The Third Grade Teachers

Poetry and Punch

Poetry and Punch:
Poetry and Punch is a long time tradition at Parkview School. Every third grade has participated in this fun event for many years. The class will recite individual, group/partner poems and class poems. You are invited to this fun event and can invite family such as grandparents. Afterwards, we will enjoy cookies and punch.

Most of Mrs. Studer's class & Mrs. Moldenhauer's class have chosen their individual poems. Mrs. French's class will look for poems after break.
*If time permits, over break your child can practice his/her individual poem for Poetry and Punch. Your child chose his/her individual poem and some chose their partner poem. If your child was here today, a copy of the poem is in your child's homework folder. Your child should read the poem with expression and add hand gestures while saying the lines. Your child can also work on his/her Egypt project and artifact.

Reading Quilt

Dear family,

During the months of April and May, we will have a new system for keeping track of reading and math minutes. We will trust that your child is practicing either multiplication facts (if your child was DV or NS on quarter 3 progress report) or division facts (if your child was SC or EX on quarter 3 progress report) each night for 5 to 10 minutes. You can log the fact minutes in the assignment book.

For reading, your child will be required to read 6 different genres for each month (6 for April and 6 for May). Once your child has read all 12 genres of books, your child will earn a picnic in the park with the entire 3rd grade on Friday, June 2nd. If your child reads genres and completes the entire reading quilt, he/she will get a special prize. Tonight, this reading quilt will come home. Please read over the information and email your child's teacher with questions.

Thanks!
