Monthly Pond Visit:
This year your child will be observing the pond across the street each month and discussing how the pond biome changes throughout the year. This week, your child will be going to the pond with his/her class (weather permitting). Please have your child dresses for the weather. Your child can also bring a plastic bag to sit on while journaling about the pond.

Communication Arts:
Your child has begun to practice writing summaries about the books they've heard or read in class. Your child used various story maps which included characters, setting, problem, events and the conclusion to write a letter. The letters show if your child understand how to summarize the key events in a story (comprehension). We will continue to practice this skill throughout the year.

Fairy Tale Unit:
This month your child will learn about the various components of a fairy tale so they can understand this genre The teachers will read various versions of Cinderella (Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, Yeh-Shen, Egyptian Cinderella and the original Cinderella). We will teach your child how to compare and contrast the various versions as well as understand the theme (message of the story). We will connect this to writing and each kid will write their own fractured fairy tale version of Cinderella and create a pumpkin carriage at the end of the month to connect with the story (More details to come).
Maps & Globes:
We are continuing to teach maps and globes. More information will be coming home regarding the final test dates for maps and globes test and mental map quiz. At home your child can practice creating a mental map of the world including the 7 continents and 5 oceans. A letter went home with your child's mental map and the date of the final quiz is TBD. Your child's teacher will let you know when those assessments will take place.
