Soda Bottles Needed for Math
For the October Number Corner, third grade will be collecting water in 1 liter bottles. Each third grade teacher needs six one liter bottles. If anyone happens to have this size bottle at home in your recycling, we would love it if you brought it to school.

Third Grade Pond Visit Monday
In third grade, we study biomes as part of our science curriculum. One of the biomes that we study is the pond. We are lucky to have two ponds just across the street from our school, in Centennial Park. Throughout the year, every month or so, we will be visiting the ponds to note the changes we observe in weather, plants, water, and pond animals. We will record these in our pond observation journal.
We will be starting to visit the pond this week. Please see your child's teacher about the exact dates and times. Also, please have your child dress for the weather conditions (sometimes it can get muddy). On Monday, the classrooms will go at these times: (weather permitting)

Reading Goals
Reading Homework:
Also, tonight will start the first week of real homework. Today your child made a reading goal of the number of books, he/she will read this quarter. After your child reads a book, he/she should record that book in their reading goal packet. Attached is a reading goal sheet that was given today:
Typically your child should read 15 minutes per night, but if your child has a busy night, he/she can double up over the weekend or a less busy night.
Picture Day Wed. 9/11
Just a friendly reminder that Picture day is this Wed., (9/11).
ALL students will be photographed for the class composite picture unless a parent contacts the office to exempt him/her. Please notify the office at 262-376-6805 or 262-376-6806 before Wednesday, September 11 to list your student(s) as exempt.
Individual ordering envelopes will be sent home with each student. You are also able to order and prepay using the following link: Parkview Elementary School Picture Prepay online 2019. On Picture Day, you must send the print-out from online ordering or the picture envelope to school with your child.

Dear Families,
If you look, you’ll see Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) emerge from some of the most unlikely places and in so many careers. As elementary students, unless a family member has a career in this field, they may have no idea of the endless opportunities in this area.
We want to have a “Career Day” for the 3rd-5th graders where students can see how these skills are used in a variety of jobs. The goal is for them to not only learn about new career options, but also how these skills may be used in careers that might be surprising.
We would love for you to come in on Wednesday, September 25th from 2:00-3:15 to share your expertise. You would meet with three small groups of students for 20 minutes each.
1. Describe your career or hobby.
2. How S.T.E.A.M. elements are involved?
3. Try to have a work related example you can do with the students to get a real feel for what you do.
Please sign up on the Google form by September 16th, so we can plan for your visit.
For questions about our event, please contact Stephen Keller, skeller@cedarburg.k12.wi.us.
Thanks for bringing careers to life,
Parkview Community Connections Committee

MAP testing
MAP Testing will begin next week. Please make sure your child is rested and has a nutritious breakfast. Please try to avoid doctor appointments during this time, as well.

To help familiarize you with MAP, we’ve gathered the top questions parents ask us regarding MAP.
- What is MAP and what does it measure? You may be familiar with paper and pencil tests where all students are asked the same questions and spend a fixed amount of time taking the test. MAP is different. MAP is a computer adaptive test, which means every student gets a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions get harder. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier. By the end of the test, most students will answer about half the questions correctly. MAP can follow students wherever they are starting from, regardless of the grade they are in. For instance, if a third grader is actually reading like a fifth grader, MAP will be able to identify that. Or, if a fifth grader is doing math like a third grader, MAP will identify that. Both things are incredibly important for a teacher to know, so that they can plan instruction efficiently. MAP covers reading, language usage, and math.
- What is a RIT score? When students finish, they receive a score – a number – called a RIT score. This score represents a student’s achievement level at a given moment in the school year, when the test is given. Taken over time, the scores can compute a student’s academic growth.
- How often will my child take the MAP test? Parkview will give MAP tests to students at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year.
- How long is the MAP test? Most students take less than an hour to complete a MAP test. However, MAP is not timed, and students may take as much time as they need to complete them. Breaks are also given to individuals during these tests, if needed.
- Is MAP a standardized test? How is it different from ‘high-stakes’ or state tests? When we talk about high-stakes tests, usually we’re talking about a state test. These are designed to measure what students already know, based on what is expected at their grade level, as a way to measure grade-level proficiency. MAP is designed to measure student achievement in the moment, and growth over time, regardless of grade level, so it is quite different. Another difference is the timeliness of the results. While state test usually return information in the fall after the test is taken, MAP gives quick feedback to teachers, administrators, students and parents. Teachers receive results with MAP that show what students know and what they are ready to learn. The results can be used to help personalize lessons at the appropriate level for the students.

A Great First Day in 3rd Grade!
Today was an exciting day as we welcomed students back to school. Third graders created All About Me posters to share, played Get to Know You Bingo, learned about our Math Number Corner, conducted our first class survey and recorded our data, and read The First Day Jitters...even teachers can feel excited and a bit nervous on the first day of school! All of our third graders did an amazing job showing Parkview Pride! We are looking forward to a terrific school year with your children!
Decorate notebook: Due 9/10
Dear family,
