Simple Machines Project

Mark your calendars for Tues., May 7th
6:00-7:30

Dear Family,

The third graders are beginning to explore and understand Simple Machines in science class. Your child will learn about several simple machines and the purpose of each machine in our daily lives. At school your child watched Caine’s Arcade, which is about a young boy who created an arcade at his dad’s auto parts store. Please view the video for our inspiration of this exciting project:
                        Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul9c-4dX4Hk.
We would like your child to design and create an arcade game using recycled & re-purposed materials implementing the different simple machines. Various grocery stores usually have extra boxes available. This project can be done with a partner but we are leaving that up to parent discretion, as parents will have to coordinate times for your children to work together on this project.
The arcade project is due Tuesday, May 7th.  Your child will be able to view other third grade projects on display that day.  Each child will also be graded based on the third grade simple machine rubric. Everyone will get a participation certificate.
Parkview’s Science Fair is Tuesday, May 7th from 6:00-7:30. Each student/group will present their project at the Science Fair that night. Attendance is not required but we are encouraging participation.  Please let us know if your child is unavailable that evening. On the night of the Simple Machines Arcade, please have your child ready to explain his/her machine to the visitors! The arcade should be functional, fun, made from recycled materials, and use simple machines as part of the project! Your child is required to stay by his/her game throughout the hour and a half. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
*Please have your child’s project at school by the morning of May 7th. Your child can bring his/her project in at 8:45 on 5/7 or bring his/her project in 3:45-4:00 on 5/6.
PLEASE DO NOT HAVE TICKETS OR PRIZES to give away associated with your arcade game!

Thanks so much,

The Third Grade Teachers

Dear Parents/Guardian(s),

Starting over Spring Break, students will begin an at-home Reading Quilt Project. This is will be taking the place of the quarterly Reading Logs.   Students will be asked to complete outside reading, representative of each type of book listed on their quilt square.  This will be an on-going project and should be returned on Tuesday, May 28th.

Each child will have a Quilt Square at school that will be part of a class quilt.  The attached is a sample of the one your child will have at school.  For your child to color in a patch on their school quilt square, he/she will need to turn in specific information to their teacher (book title, author, what type of book it was and a parent signature).  Once the information has been verified with your child’s teacher, they will be able to color in the particular patch related to the book they read on their portion of the classroom quilt.  We have attached a list that should be kept in their Take Home Folder for simple record keeping.

The books can be from our school library, public libraries, book clubs, home, or virtually any other source.  At least two quilt squares have been completed during IMC this past week.  Students will need to read a total of 12 books by Friday, May 31st.  If your child completes their whole quilt square, they will get a special prize, as an added incentive. If a book is longer in length it can be recorded in 2 areas on the quilt.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,
Ms. Moldenhauer
Mrs. Studer
Mrs. French
