Dear Family,
During the school year, it is an expectation that your child is reading 15 minutes per night for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2. During Quarter 3 and 4, those minutes will increase to 20 minutes per night. Studies have shown that children who read every day increase their fluency, vocabulary, knowledge and understanding of the world. Here are a few articles that will explain why reading is essential for your child’s growth.
Another requirement will be to practice his/her math facts for 5 minutes each night. Your child can always practice more than the required amount of time. Some students may need to put in extra time to become proficient in their fact fluency. Your child can practice online games, flash cards, math games or any other way that helps your child learn. Visit our blog for suggested math sites.
At any point throughout the year, if your child is EX on his/her math facts timed test, he/she can begin to practice the next content strand. Please note that this rubric will change and become more challenging as the year progresses.

We will be sending home a reading/math calendar each month to keep track of these minutes. * Please make sure to add up all of the reading and math minutes at the end of the month. (This would be a great activity for your child to do to practice their addition skills). After the reading/math calendar is returned, the third grade classes will have a monthly reading/math minute celebration.
If you have questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. Thanks! Third Grade Teachers
